Shaheed Beant Singh and Satwant Singh assasinated Indira Gandhi when she put into place Operation Shanti- an operation of ethnic cleansing of Sikhs arranged for November 1984 and thus averted a total massacre. Rajiv Gandhi demanded vengeance and so organised pogroms for the same time.
